WHY DID WE FEEL THE NECESSITY OF MAKING SUCH AND ANNOUNCEMENT?

We see that from the stories of those with mental problems and the announcements in the press, in the treatment of those with mental problems, approaches that are discrepant to the professional ethics, and implementations that have no remedial effect exist and these are used for advertising purposes.  Our objective in this announcement is to contribute to the provision of executing our profession in sexual treatment appropriate to the Scientific and ethical Standard.

HOW ARE SEXUAL PROBLEMS TREATED?

Human behavior and sexuality is affected by bodily, psychological, social conditions. Sexuality is not only limited to organs.  There are feelings, ideas and established beliefs related to sexuality.  It is a known fact that these established beliefs can be wrong most of the time.  In the emergence of the sexual problems and disorders,  there are the dynamic effects of people’s physical and psychological characteristics and bilateral relations.  Naturally the treatment of sexual problems can change as the factors in their formation change.  By interviewing the person, the factors causing the emergence of the problems and those causing it to be established are analyzed together.  Medicine or psychotherapy to be effective in the treatment of the problem is chosen.
If the sexual problem is related to a biological reason,  its treatment will be realized by medicine and other medical treatment. Under such a condition,  the treatment is done by urologists, gynecologists and obstetricians, or psychiatrists.  If the sexual problem is related to psychological factors,  or even if  has developed due to a medical reason, if the psychological factors made the condition worse,  sexual therapies should be implemented or added.  Sexual therapies can be realized by psychiatrists or clinical psychologists trained in their field.  Like all treatments, sexual treatments should also be based on scientific data.
In order for a new treatment method to be included in the area of application,  it needs to complete scientific and ethical processes, it has to be proven effective, and approved by the  career groups.  Whether a psychotherapy method is effective for a certain disorder or not, a series of studies compliant to the scientific principles  should be completed.
In recent years, sexual problems and their treatmen have accumulated.  We are happy to mention here that there are centers aware of all these developments and implementing them. The effect of sexual therapies in the treatment of sexual function disorders, were discussed in 70´s, 80´s and  after publishing the comparative results in scientific magazines, were proven 30 years ago.   Since the 1970’s both in Turkey and in the World,  with “Sexual Therapy”  most of the Vaginismus and Premature Ejaculation cases are treated with success, and most of the sexual aversion, erectile dysfunction in men and  women’s sexual stimulation and orgasm problems and other sexual function disorders are  treated.   Although there are variance depending on the type of sexual problem and the couple with the problem, sexual treatments last 2-4 months on the average with 6-10 sessions however,  there may be cases treated with a few interviews in a short time or there may be cases taking one or to years to be treated.
The sexual treatment implemented in those with sexual problems and are known to be effective are in fact a special way of learning.  Within the process of this learning individual is taught about these:  Generally in psychotherapies and especially in sexual treatment a private and secure environment for learning is  formed.  In this environment, individual is encouraged to discover about himself, his identity, his body and his relationship.  This discovery and learning occurs in varying speed and in degrees depending on the individual’s learning characteristics. Therefore,  while the sexual  problem is treated with medicine,  the relationship between the patient and the doctor is important and is sometimes implemented as part of psychotherapy or sexual therapy.   Because sexuality disorders are not related only to body.

WHAT IS NOT DONE DURING SEXUAL TREATMENTS?

Just as the treatments should be based on scientifically proven evidences, there are certain rules related to the treatment environment.  Sexual treatments, psychotherapy sessions are done in doctors’ offices or in hospitals.  The frequency of the interviews, their duration and basic principles are  determined.  They should comply with medicine, psychiatry and sexual treatment scientific standards and ethical rules. For example, examination of a patient applying with a sexual problem by a psychiatrist, consists of interviews during which the behavior, ides and feelings are analyzed and  not the physical examination.  If the doctor believes the patient has a physical problem, he directs her to a gynecologist or obstetrician or a urologist.  NO sexual relation is established in the psychologist’s or in a doctor’s office from whichever branch he is in.  There is no such scientific treatment method and this does not comply with morals of medicine.
We wish this will be beneficial in the issue of approaches that are not appropriate for people in the treatment of sexual disorders that is an open area to abuse and diversion.
